Open Question: Is it legal to charge me for a full month's rent?

I am a college student who has signed a lease for this coming school year. My appartment complex is not allowing anyone to move in until August 13th, but they say we have to still pay a full month's rent. This seems strange and unfair to me to pay a full month's rent for nearly half a month of living there. Like going to Burger King and paying full price for a whopper meal and only getting fries and a drink. Is there anything I can do to try to save some money which I am very short on right now, or am I just stuck paying for a full month? I am in Kansas, have already paid a deposit, and it never said anything about getting shorted a month in the lease. And they aren't making any adjustments to a later month's price.
